Shopping secondhand is a great way to participate in slow fashion without spending a lot of money. In a previous post, I talked about shopping secondhand at the local level. You can check that out here.
But what if you don’t have access to secondhand clothing stores in your town? Or maybe you don’t like shopping in person. There are also some great options for secondhand shopping online.
How I use Online Resources to Shop Secondhand
If I am looking for something specific for my wardrobe, and I am not in the mood to go to a local shop to look, or I haven’t been able to find it, I will search through some of my favorite online secondhand shops.
I will also peruse these sites for my favorite slow fashion brands to see what’s available in the secondhand market.
If I find something that I’ve had my eye on, or a piece that would be a great addition to my wardrobe, I’ll purchase it. Or I’ll use secondhand retailers to look for discontinued pieces or colors from my favorite brands.
My Personal Favorite Online Sites
A few of my favorite places to shop online for secondhand clothing are Etsy, eBay and TheRealReal.
I also have accounts at Poshmark, ThredUp, Resee, and Vestiaire Collective, but I haven’t actually found anything on either of these sites that I’ve wanted to order at this point in time. Thus, I don’t have firsthand experience with ordering from them, although I do like how the sites are set up.
I was recently on the hunt for a pair of Levi 501s and I wanted a pair that were secondhand for fit purposes.
So I went to eBay and selected the “pre-owned” option on the left hand side of the screen where you can put in different parameters to search. Selecting “pre-owned” is very important to ensure that you are shopping in a slow fashion way.
TheRealReal is an online luxury consignment shop that specializes in higher end designer items.
But don’t let this scare you off.
They have really good sales and their search filters are really user friendly. I normally go to the category that I want to search and then I set the size filter and price filter. Then I set my “max” price to whatever my max budget is for the item and that’s it!
I was recently searching online for an Alice and Olivia jumpsuit that I had seen on a recent girl’s trip to Chicago.
This jumpsuit was pure perfection but I did not want to buy it new. I was unable to find the exact jumpsuit on TheRealReal, but I did find another lovely jumpsuit, a navy silk and lace number, from the same brand, that I purchased instead.
There are a lot of other online secondhand shops, and although I don’t personally have any firsthand experience with all of them, I have heard or read great things about them.
* Please note that I do not encourage shopping for the sake of shopping.
I believe in having fewer things that are well loved over having a lot of possessions, particularly clothing.
However, if you are looking for something specific and you can’t source it from an ethical, slow fashion brand, I encourage you to look into the following resources.
These resources run the gamut of clothing offerings at a variety of different prices.
