Ah, hiking boots. So utilitarian. So comfy. But stylish? I would argue that they are, and to show any non-believers, I’ve put together a few outfits to show you how I style hiking boots that make them suitable for lots of occasions.
Hiking boots are something that I keep in my wardrobe all year long. I think they translate well in every season, and not just with hiking clothes. I have the Danner Mountain Light in Cascade. Visit this post to view some other items in my shoe capsule.
These were a Christmas gift from my family last year. I really wanted a pair of boots that would be good in the snow and ice that we get every winter. But I also wanted a pair that were cool! I love the silver lace tabs and the red strings. I think the red goes with the rich caramel color so well. They are definitely on the pricey side bought new, but my husband was able to get them on sale at one of the retailers that carries them.
You can also find them, or similar ones, secondhand by searching sites such as eBay. I tried doing this for a few months last fall and didn’t have any luck finding my size so I put them on my Christmas list.
I thought that it would be useful to show you how I’ll style hiking boots for a number of different occasions, which will most likely be hypothetical for the foreseeable future as I barely leave my house.

How to Style Hiking Boots – Casual
This is definitely how I wear my hiking boots most often! I love the rugged vibe that they give off. Nobody would ever know that I relate mostly to an indoor cat when I’m wearing this outfit. But, even though this is true, I love to go hiking. It’s the one outdoor activity that I really enjoy. I even forgot to wipe away all of the dirt on these from our last hike…just keeping it real for ya π
For this casual look, I am wearing an old bodysuit that I bought a few years ago. I paired it with some vintage Levi’s that I found on Etsy last summer. I added my tan linen robe for a light layer.
I kept the jewelry pretty minimal with my activity watch and my charm necklace but I did add a funky choker that I found in a vintage shop last summer. I like how it makes it a little edgier.
I’ve been really enjoying blues and browns paired together lately. This is definitely an outfit that I would wear any old day!
How to Style Hiking Boots – Dressy
So, if you’re like me, you wouldn’t automatically think to wear hiking boots with work wear. It’s definitely not something that I do very often, but after putting together this post, I think it’s something that I’ll try more.
I pulled out my vintage silk blouse with an equestrian print for this look. I wanted some brown in at least one of the items to tie in with the warm color of the boots. I added in a pair of secondhand black wool pants that I bought from Eileen Fisher Renew last winter.
And because I was really feeling like playing dressup, here’s how it looks with a silk skirt. I added a green skirt as there is green in the horse jockey print. I think that trying to match a certain element of one garment to one of another garment makes an outfit more cohesive without it feeling too matchy-matchy (which I am also on board with…see the monochrome look below).
I kept the jewelry very minimal as I felt like the outfit had enough visual interest without the addition of accessories.
Would you try your hiking boots with work wear? I guess it would totally depend on the type of dress code that you have at work. And even if you couldn’t do it at work, it’s a fun look for your commute!
How to Style Hiking Boots – Edgy
When I think of edgy, I always think of leather. And I thought that wearing shorts with these boots would be a fun little experiment. I actually only wear these shorts in the colder months because it’s much too hot in the summer for them.
I paired my vintage leather shorts that I found at a Buffalo Exchange in Chicago last year with an oversized vintage silk shirt.
I’m really into the minimalistic look of the outfit. I decided to keep the accessories simple with my activity watch.
Also, I’m digging the 80s hair band rocker vibe that I’m giving off here π
How to Style Hiking Boots – Monochrome
I’ve been much more into monochrome looks over the past year than I ever have before. So much so that I made a matching set! These 2 pieces are actually the second (the pants) and third (the top) things that I had ever sewn.
I actually love how they almost perfectly match the boots!
This actually feels like an outfit that I would go hiking in. The material is raw silk so it isn’t hot at all. And I can definitely see my daughter filling these large pockets with all kinds of forest treasures.
What do you think? Too much of this caramel color or just the right amount?
How to Style Hiking Boots – Color
When I thought about this post, I knew that I wanted to include this silk floral dress. But I wasn’t sure what category it would fall under. Ultimately I decided to put it in the colorful category because of the pretty pinks and reds all throughout the print.
To pick up on the browns in the dress, I chose this rust colored vintage velvet jacket.
As with most of these looks, I kept the accessories minimal. I like to do this when an outfit has a bit going on, which this one does in terms of print and texture.
The above picture is the truest representation of the color of this blazer. For the life of me, I never feel like I can get it right! I think the velvet really throws it off in most photos and makes it look redder than it actually is.
Bonus: Dressy + Edgy
I pulled this skirt when I was thinking of items for a dressy look. And then I saw this leopard print dress and thought of it for the edgy look.
When I saw them together on the rack, and I hadn’t used either of them for the dressy or edgy look, this outfit was dreamt up. Then I added a pop of color with an old green purse that I recently unearthed from storage.
And voila, probably my favorite look of the bunch.
I just love the back of this dress. It’s like a party in the front AND back!
Also loving it with this vintage wool hat. If only I had somewhere to really wear it!
Now I’d love to hear from you!
Would you wear your hiking boots either of these ways? What was your favorite look of the above outfits?

So fun to see these boots styled in different way! I just ordered these and am excited to pull inspiration from this post! Question… where did you get your socks? I am obsessed with the monochrome pairing!
Thank you so much Esti! You’ll love them. The socks are from Hansel From Basel.
I love the monochromatic outfit, and Iβm so impressed you sewed it yourself! How do you care for the fabric? Hiking in raw silk sounds risky. π
Thank you Sarah! Raw silk is actually very sturdy! Itβs matte and nubby and nothing like what you think of when you think of silk π. It feels more like a nubby cotton! I wash in cold water in the machine and hang to dry ππ»
I have these boots and I was so excited to read this post because I canβt wait to get them out for winter. Love how you e styled them and will definitely try these looks! Thanks for the great post! X
Hi Kate!! Arenβt they the best!! Iβm so glad that you found this post helpful! I will definitely be wearing them more now that the weather is turning cooler too!! ππ»
