I hope you are well. I hope you are safe.

Sometimes it feels strange to talk about clothes like there’s not some huge pandemic going on. Sometimes I’m not sure what to say. But then I think about all of the bad news that filters in each and every day and I hope that I can counterbalance that with something a little more light. And maybe something that I write about will inspire you to try something a little bit different this week that will provide a welcome distraction.

So, with that in mind, I thought that I would elaborate on the mini capsule wardrobe that I eluded to in my last post.

I decided to work with a mini capsule within my larger capsule because I wanted a fun little distraction and an easy way to get dressed each morning. In not leaving the house each day, it would be far too easy for me to stay in pjs or to resort to an old pair of track pants and a sweatshirt. So I decided that I would simplify things by choosing 5 items and seeing how many days I could wear them. It has definitely made getting dressed each day MUCH easier and it has given me a fun little distraction in this not so fun time.

The idea behind the “Capsule by 5” mini capsule wardrobe is to select 5 items from your current capsule (or entire closet if you don’t do a capsule) and style them into as many outfit combinations as possible. The goal is to make at least 5 outfits, but oftentimes, more unique combinations can be found. I first did this a few weeks ago and from that capsule I was able to make 7 different outfits. I am currently working through a 5 items capsule that I plan to wear for 10 days!

“Capsule by 5” – The Items

I did my first 5 item capsule from March 23-29.

My first "capsule by 5" mini capsule wardrobe. the 5 items are hanging on a wooden clothing rack. from left to right is a pair of white pants, a tan skirt, a white lace blouse, a pale green sweater and a black jumpsuit. There is a wooden stool on one side with a hat and a yucca tree in a plat stand on the other side. a pair of black sneakers rests on the bottom of the clothing rack.

“Capsule by 5” – The Outfits

An 8 photo collage of my min capsule wardrobe with the items in one picture and then each of the 7 outfits in the rest of the pictures.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 1

The first outfit from my mini capsule wardrobe. I am wearing a pale green sweater front tucked into a tan midi length skirt. I am wearing leopard print mules and my hair is tied back with a scarf.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 2

The second outfit. The are 2 photos. In the first photo, I am wearing a white lace shirt untucked over a pair of white pants. I have left the last few buttons undone. I am wearing white slingback and holding a tan rectangular straw bag. The second photo is a closeup of the shirt to show the lace detailing.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 3

The third outfit. I am wearing the light green sweater over my black jumpsuit with black platform sneakers and sheer plaid socks. There is also a closeup of me holding a knot at the base of the sweater made with a hair elastic that I then tucked up under the hem of the sweater to give it a little more shape and visual interest.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 4

The fourth outfit. There are 2 photos. The photo on top is a flatly of my lace shirt, my tan skirt, a pair of cream colored clogs with a dark wood base and some jewelry. The bottom photo is of me wearing the items together with the shirt knotted at the waist.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 5

The fifth outfit. I am wearing my light green sweater with my white pants and a pair of white high top all star converse. My hands are in my pockets and I am looking down.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 6

The sixth outfit. I am wearing my black silk jumpsuit over my white lace shirt with leopard print boots.

“Capsule by 5” Outfit 7

The seventh, and final, outfit from my mini capsule wardrobe and I am wearing my black silk jumpsuit under my white lace shirt with a pair of black mules. The shirt is left long and the bottom buttons are undone for a more casual look.

I loved this mini capsule! It felt soothing and calming in a time where I don’t necessarily feel that way inside. My favorite outfit was definitely day 4 with the white lace shirt knotted at the waist with the tan skirt and clogs.

Which outfit was your favorite?

Until next time,

  1. This was such a great set. The jumpsuit was so versatile, and it was neat how it varied from sporty-casual to dressy. I always find it a bit difficult to do interesting/post-worthy mini capsules because I don’t have many double-duty items like button-downs or layerable dresses, but I love seeing what you’re coming up with!

Thank you so much Margaret!! Yes, that jumpsuit has been such a great piece to style and I’ve been having a lot of fun with these mini capsules.
