You are currently viewing 3 Ways to Style a Skirt

In honor of Slow Fashion October, which I only recently became aware of, I thought it would be fun to take an item from my closet and style it for 3 different occasions. The item I chose was a skirt, mainly because I need inspiration to actually wear a skirt.

In the past, I have been a dress wearing girl, but very rarely would you find me in a skirt. In fact, I only own 1 skirt and its acquisition was a recent event.

I actually found this particular skirt at a local consignment shop. I don’t usually browse through skirts but I had a little extra time that day so I decided to have a look.

Something about the billowy shape and windowpane pattern enticed me enough to try it on. I’m glad that I did because I secretly (well, not anymore, I guess) love it.

As we are transitioning from summer to fall in my part of the woods (midwest US), I decided to play dress up with this skirt one day and I came up with 3 ways to wear it.

As I mentioned above, I anticipate that I may need some inspiration to actually wear this skirt. I think this will definitely help.

Look 1 – Casual Outing

This is an outfit I would wear on any old day to do normal errands like get groceries or go on a family outing. Preferably an art museum (because I love art museums).

I’d also wear this for a day when I was planning to meet up with a friend. Preferably for breakfast (because that’s my favorite meal).

I paired the skirt with a cozy cardigan and a t-shirt to bring the skirt down to a casual level. Flats are great when you need to walk a lot but you still want to look put together. I kept the accessories light with my everyday watch and a gold link chain.

Look 2 – Wear to Work / Dinner

I see this outfit working well in a business setting. Or out for dinner at a nice restaurant.

Although the majority of the outfit is black, the different items are all very different in texture.

The vintage Coach bag has a nice structured shape and the clogs are sophisticated and comfortable enough to wear around the office or walking about.

Again, I kept the other accessories simple with my everyday watch and some gold necklaces.

Look 3 – Date Night

This blazer has really nice lace detailing along the neck and down the front, as well as at the sleeve openings. You can easily dress it  up or down.

Here I chose to pair the skirt with a blazer and a black silk camisole. I love how you can take the jacket off and it looks almost like a dress.

A fun circle bag, which can also be worn around the waist and a pair of leopard mules are fun additions to the outfit. Again, I kept the accessories light and classic with a watch and some gold necklaces.

Fun Fact: I wore Outfit 2 to a business dinner last weekend and I wore Outfit 3 for belated birthday drinks with some friends last week.

Art imitates life (or something like that). Also, my nights are rarely that busy.

What is an item in your closet that you wear for a variety of different occasions?

Until next time,

Pin it for later…

Posts like this are helpful! Where is the top from the second outfit from?

Hi Ellen! I am so happy that you found this post helpful. The sweater in the second outfit is from Eileen Fisher. It is from a past season and not available on her site anymore. A quick search on Poshmark for “Eileen fisher black knit sweater” turned up a couple that are the same and then a few other similar ones. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any other help. Thanks!
