How to Style a Quilted Coat for Fall 3 Ways - Uncomplicated Spaces

I’m not much for trends. I think that they’re just a good marketing ploy to get us to buy more stuff that we don’t need. But sometimes, one comes along that I totally fall for. And if it seems like a trend that has legs…i.e., one that I will love for a long time, I jump on board. Which recently happened to me with the quilted coat trend.

Like most trends that I end up incorporating in my wardrobe, the quilted coat one has been around for a while. I first started seeing it this past spring with all of the vintage military liners. It may have even been around longer than that but I wasn’t really paying attention.

I even started looking for a quilted coat last spring. I searched on Etsy mostly but I never found one that I really loved, so I added it to my thrift list and moved on. I didn’t even think about it again once summer arrived and it was too hot to think about wearing a coat.

About 3 weeks ago, I was in a local consignment shop when I spotted a denim quilted coat. I picked it off the rack and made sure that the composition was 100% cotton. It was, so I tried it on. I have a hard time with denim coats. I love how they look on other people and I think they give such a cool vibe to an outfit, but I can never find one that feels like me. I think it’s the collar.

Well, this one didn’t have a collar. And it was perfectly oversized. I knew that it would work over a lot of the pieces in my wardrobe for fall. Plus, it was only $9! It was really a win-win-win-win!

But apparently not just bad things come in 3s because after I found this coat, I found 2 more. So now I have 3 quilted coats, or quilt-like coats.

Let’s style them!!

Quilted Coat Outfit 1

For the coat that started the streak, I decided to offset the denim with an all black outfit. I chose to wear a semi-sheer wool turtleneck (also thrifted around the same time as the coat) under an old black silk jumpsuit with my black combat boots.

I love the casualness of this outfit. It’s comfortable but still a little dressy, which is how I like my outfits. There is also an underlying masculine vibe going on, which is another element that I like in my outfits.

The mix of materials and textures make the outfit interesting and as such, it requires very little accessorizing. I did add an old gold necklace and pendent, as well as a gold plated choker.

Quilted Coat Outfit 2

The second coat that I found is a little more quilt-like than quilted but I thought it deserved a place in this post. I actively searched for this coat after seeing it on @skirt_locker a few weeks ago. I ended up finding it on Etsy and after determining that the measurements would work, I ordered it.

I had been thinking of making a coat similar to this myself. But now that this one has magically (?) fallen into my lap, I don’t think there’s any need. Do you?

It’s extremely colorful, which is very unlike me. But as I’ve been embracing more color into my life, which has felt really good to me this year, I feel like it’s a good fit. And I freaking LOVE it, which is honestly the most important aspect of any addition.

Because there is a lot of pastel in the coat, I knew that I wanted to have the rest of the outfit be warm and neutral. Looking at the colors in the jacket, I chose to match the rest of the outfit to the tan. I chose my secondhand oatmeal cashmere sweater and my brown wide leg pants to wear with it. I also grabbed my thrifted brown suede boots. I love how the browns tone down the brightness of the coat.

Quilted Coat Outfit 3

The third quilted coat was actually one that I had tried previously and put back at one of the local consignment shops. I told myself that I didn’t need another coat. And I was almost convinced. But some photo on Pinterest re-peaked my interest in it and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I told myself that if I went back to the shop and it was still there then I was meant to own it. If it wasn’t, well then I wasn’t.

I guess you can figure out what happened when I got there ;).

This coat definitely has a more rugged vibe. I’ve primarily worn it to walk the dog or to sit outside with a friend for a chat. But I wanted to style it as I would wear it if I were going somewhere, even just to picnic in the park. Actually , it’s pretty perfect for a stroll and picnic in the park.

I knew that I wanted to wear my hiking boots with it since the 2 go so well together. But I also wanted to dress them up a little. I believe in wearing all of my clothes for all occasions. I don’t just renege my hiking boots to hiking. And so, I chose to wear my oversized cream cashmere sweater over my cream pleated vintage skirt. I added a pair of cozy grey socks and a grey silk scarf to complete the look.

Love this, especially the first look! I had never considered a quilted coat before but now if I see one in the charity shop I’ll definitely be giving it a second look 😘
