I feel like I’ve been planning my spring capsule wardrobe in my head for months and I’m so excited to finally be able to share it!
In the past, I’ve switched over my seasonal capsule wardrobe on the first day of spring. But after doing this for the past 5 years, I know it’s better for me to hold out until April rolls around.
After a few rounds of editing, my spring capsule wardrobe contains 38 items, including jackets, shoes and handbags. I feel like I was very methodical about this selection compared to previous capsules.
With this capsule, the focus was less on emotion and more on function while choosing items.
The Steps I took to Build my Capsule Wardrobe:
Step 1: Identify my style pillars.
I define style pillars as the 4 words that best describe my personal style at this time in my life. This is something new that I’ve been trying and I find that it has been really helping me choose items that I am actually going to wear.
My style pillars for my spring capsule wardrobe are:
- Romantic
- Edgy
- Casual
- Minimalist
In order for an item to be included in my capsule wardrobe, it needed to have at least 2 style pillars on its own before styling.
For example, I included a cotton floral midi skirt, which is both romantic and casual. I also included a silk jumpsuit which has 3 pillars: edgy, casual, minimalist.
Step 2: Identify a theme.
This is also something new to me, but I thought that having a theme would be a great way to streamline my capsule. The theme that I chose for this capsule wardrobe was “90s minimalism”.
This theme started forming when I pulled a blush pink slip dress from my purgatory pile (items in storage that I’m thinking of getting rid of). This item, in addition to my black slip dress got me thinking about simple lines and solid colors. Safe to say, it’s staying for now!
I’ve been saving some “90s minimalist style” outfit inspiration on Pinterest.
Step 3: Select items from my winter capsule wardrobe.
Some items from my winter capsule fit in with the style pillars, theme and upcoming weather, so I included them in this capsule.
Step 4: Go through items in storage.
I pulled out all of the warm weather items that had been in storage, selected the ones that fit the style pillars, theme, weather AND that I was excited to wear for the next 3 months.
Step 5: Edit, edit and edit some more.
I did steps 3 and 4 in one day and then I let the items hang on a wooden clothing rack in my bedroom for a few days. Having the capsule be visible at this stage helps me determine which items I really want to wear for the upcoming season.
I removed 6 items and added in 1 over the course of a few days of looking at the selection.
My Spring Capsule Wardrobe
In total, my spring capsule contains 38 items of clothing:
- 1 jumpsuit
- 4 dresses
- 4 jackets
- 4 shirts
- 3 tops
- 1 tank top
- 2 vests
- 2 skirts
- 1 pant
- 2 jeans
- 6 knitwear
- 4 shoes
- 4 handbags
Of these 38 items:
- 29 were purchased secondhand (1 was altered from a dress to a top).
- 1 was memade – I wish that I had included more memade items but I wasn’t really excited about any of them for this present capsule.
- 8 were purchased new at some point.
Final Thoughts on my Capsule Wardrobe
I’m really happy with the final selection for this capsule. Whenever I build a capsule, I always notice that I don’t have many basics in terms of t-shirts and tank tops. But then I never do anything about it. I think this is something I’ll look into for my summer capsule. There’s a t-shirt pattern included in my 2023 Make Nine Sewing Challenge that I hope to make.
Once the final selections were made, I was also a little disappointed to have only included 1 memade item: a vest. I think part of this is that most of the items that I’ve made are a few years old now and aren’t currently aligning with my style, or they’re out of season. While I don’t plan on adding any purchased items to this capsule, I do have a few items that I want to make so there might be some memade additions.
I haven’t been very motivated with my wardrobe lately. Honestly, I haven’t been consistently dressing myself well for the past year. I’ve been going through cycles where I’ll dress nicely from my capsule for a few weeks and then I’ll get in a rut and wear track pants and sweatshirts for a week. I’m really hoping to break out of that and I feel optimistic that this capsule will help me do that.
