You are currently viewing How to Wear Wide Leg Pants 2021

I guess you’ve heard by now that skinny pants are out and wide leg pants are in?!? Well, I’m here to tell you to wear whatever you want and to ignore silly trends and rules about what you should wear.

But…

In case you were interested in adding some wide leg pants to your wardrobe, I’ve got a few ideas about how to style them. Since the cornerstone of a sustainable wardrobe is finding lots of ways to wear whatever you already own, or items that you’d like to buy, I’ve come up with 4 casual chic ways to style wide leg pants.

I’ve been wearing a pair of charcoal grey wide leg pants non-stop for the past 2 weeks, ever since I finally altered them to fit me better. I purchased them secondhand from The Real Real and they’re actually 100% wool, but I’ve been loving them for the warmer weather too.

We all know that wool keeps us warm in winter, but did you know that wool can also keep you cool in the warmer months? Wool has heat retention properties that are at work during the colder weather to keep warm air close to your body, and moisture wicking properties that come in handy during the warmer months to wick moisture away from your body. It’s basically a perfect year round fabric, especially if you’re looking to “buy less, buy better”.

But no matter what material your wide leg pants are made from, the styling possibilities are endless. And chic.

Outfit 1: B&W Striped Long Sleeve + Wide Leg Pants + Sandals

I’ve always been under the impression that b&w stripes are chic and I can’t help but feel that when they’re paired with a pair of wide leg pants, it creates a super chic outfit. Arguments?

This is definitely an outfit I would wear to work, grab lunch with a friend, run general errands or just hang out at home in.

The top is an old Eileen Fisher tunic that I cropped. I really like this length…not too long or short…just right. I think the stripes are enough of a statement on their own so I kept the rest of the outfit simple with just the handbag and a pair of simple sandals.

Outfit 2: Denim Vest + Flannel Shirt + Tank Top + Pants + Trainers

Not only have I been wearing these pants on repeat, but I’ve been wearing this vest on repeat too, ever since I thrifted it a few weeks ago.

I think a lot of times we can look at an item and only see one scenario that it can be worn in. These pants are a pretty dressy item and I think a lot of people would just renege them to workwear. But I hope this outfit shows how they can be dressed down and worn in more casual situations.

They honestly feel as good as wearing sweatpants so I have no problem wearing them on the weekends.

Here I’ve paired them with a cropped tank top, a flannel shirt, a denim vest and trainers.

This is also a perfect outfit for the transitional seasons, or for a place that experiences a wide range of temperatures in a day since you can remove layers as needed.

Outfit 3: Silk Shirt + Bodysuit + Wide Leg Pants + Sandals

Not gonna lie…this third outfit makes me feel like a long lost Olson twin 😉

This silk shirt is one of my all time favorite thrift finds. It’s from the men’s section. It’s from the 80s (pretty sure). And it’s living it’s best (second) life as a staple in my closet.

I would wear this to work and feel quite comfortable and chic all day! It’s also the perfect layering piece when it’s warm outside and I need sun protection.

And there’s so many ways to wear it. I’m just a really big fan!

Here, I’ve just buttoned the top button and let the rest of the shirt hang open over a bodysuit. It definitely creates a loose on top/loose on bottom silhouette but I actually really like that. And I think the peaking through of the fitted bodysuit underneath gives it a little more of a tailored feel.

As an alternative, you could fully button the silk shirt and tuck it into the pants for a more fitted outfit. You could also knot it at the waist for a more playful vibe.

Outfit 4: Bodysuit + Pants + Sandals

For this final outfit, I simply removed the silk shirt so that the bodysuit was exposed for an outfit with a fitted on top/loose on bottom silhouette. And I added a brass collar as a little statement.

I would wear this outfit out for dinner and drinks, to a picnic or bbq, or on any hot summer day.

I think Claire’s a fan too!
