It’s easy to focus on the big moments in life that bring us joy. But for most of us, those moments happen infrequently. There is so much joy in the simple things. In the everyday routines that we center our lives around. But so often, we overlook these simple joys.
But what would happen if we slowed down enough to savor those simple things that we do everyday.
Would we feel more content?
Would we appreciate our lives more?
Would our lives feel more abundant?
Instead of waiting for the big moments to experience joy, we could experience little bursts of joy all throughout the day. They likely won’t add up to the joy we feel in life’s big moments, but they can make the everyday feel a little more special.
As an exercise in slow living, make note of the simple everyday things that you do everyday. As you write your list, which ones bring you the most joy when you think of them? The next time you do them, take a few minutes to slow down and savor the moment.
Here are a few of the simple things that I’m focusing on and enjoying this winter:
A cup of hot coffee.
Kitty scratches.
The first footprints in freshly fallen snow.
Cat naps.
Crisp winter walks.
Wearing something special (in my case, a knitted hat from my mother).
More hot coffee.
That look of undying love your dog gives you.
Winter shadows.
Candlelight on a cozy evening.
This post was entirely inspired by a little video that I put together this past weekend to share the simple things that bring me joy everyday…
What are the simple things that bring you joy in your everyday life?

I love doing ten minute sun salutations in the mornings and writing morning pages. I do this very sporadically now, but I used to quite regularly. I also love taking long, leisurely walks. When I still worked in an office, I worked at an office building in the middle of a downtown hub, so I would walk down the sidewalk after I ate lunch just to get out for a little while. Sometimes I really miss my pre-pandemic life, but now that it’s happened I don’t know if I could ever go back to any of that. Now I’m just trying my best to find new ways of slowing down and experiencing life.
Those all sound like great ways to slow down and enjoy the simple things! I definitely sympathize with missing some things about pre-pandemic life but it’s also made me realize all of the things I used to do simply because they were expected of me. I think that I’ll be more selective going forward. Have you found this too?
