You are currently viewing What’s in my Colorful and Print Happy Fall Capsule Wardrobe?

34 items. That’s the final count on my fall capsule wardrobe. A collection of dresses, blazers, shirts and pants that will see me through the next 3 months. After putting together my preliminary fall capsule last week and then sitting with those choices for a week, I settled on 34 items.

I put my emotions aside, especially for those things that I was most excited to wear, and I analyzed what my life would look like for the next 3 months. Honestly, not a whole lot different from the last year and a half, so I reevaluated any dressier items and made sure that my selection was appropriate for a lot of home time.

As a result, I made a few changes to the preliminary capsule that I had put together and the new capsule looks like this…

A wooden clothing rack is holding a selection of colorful clothing. There is a dresser to the right of it. You can partially see the dresser and a few items on it. There is a wooden picture rail above both items and one picture is in the middle.

From the preliminary capsule, I ended up removing 8 items:

  • a pair of black jeans with white stripes – they felt more summer appropriate and I have a pair of black jeans in my capsule that I like more. No need for 2 pairs.
  • a pair of tan linen trousers – these also felt more summer appropriate and I enjoy them more with sandals than boots.
  • a cream lace blouse – a little too dressy for what I anticipate my lifestyle this fall will be.
  • a black t-shirt – I was only adding it in as a layering piece for under shirts/blazers, but I have a black bodysuit included that I like more for this purpose.
  • a denim duster/dress – I have a denim shirt in my capsule, and also a denim jacket (I don’t include outerwear in my capsule) that I’m more excited to wear this fall.
  • leather shorts – I might regret this decision but I’m not a huge shorts fan and I felt like I wore them a lot this summer.
  • black/white checkered blazer – I’m really excited to wear the other 3 blazers that I’ve included but I wasn’t really feeling the same level of excitement for this one.
  • blue zip neck sweater – This feels more like a spring/summer sweater to me. I have a marled grey zip neck sweater that I’m much more excited to wear.

And I added in 5 new items:

  • a blue/green/white checkered cami and pant set that I made last week. Read more about it in this post.
  • a cornflower blue wool sweater
  • a brown wool sweater
  • 2-toned jeans that I made back in the spring
A view from above of the dresser drawer that holds a few of the capsule wardrobe items. There are 3 rolled sweaters in one basket: a brown, blue and marled grey/black one. In the basket beside it is a folded navy blue cardigan, a grey top and some black tops.

The Final Item Selection for my Fall Capsule Wardrobe

I ended up with a lot of color and print in my fall capsule wardrobe. A lot of the items are ones that I also had in my colorful spring capsule wardrobe. The final breakdown of my fall capsule wardrobe includes the following items:

  • 1 cami
  • 1 bodysuit
  • 1 ribbed crew neck sweater
  • 1 lightweight turtleneck sweater
  • 2 crew neck sweaters
  • 1 zip neck sweater
  • 1 cardigan
  • 2 short vests
  • 2 silk shirts; 1 long sleeved, 1 short sleeved
  • 1 jean shirt
  • 2 flannel shirts
  • 3 blazers
  • 7 dresses
  • 1 long vest
  • 6 pairs of pants
  • 2 pairs of jeans

A collage of the 7 dresses and one long dress in my fall capsule wardrobe.
A collage of 8 photos of the 6 pairs of pants and 2 pairs of jeans in my capsule.

The breakdown of items, based on how they were added to my wardrobe is:

  • 25 items were purchased secondhand, mostly locally and some online
  • 2 new (the black bodysuit was bought new about 3 years ago, the brown crew neck sweater was gifted from Eileen Fisher in 2020)

If you are wondering about any of the secondhand items above, please leave a comment below.

As always, I haven’t included any shoes or jackets in this capsule. These are 2 areas that I love and I don’t want to feel restricted. Where I live, the fall can turn cold pretty quickly and having really great footwear and outerwear makes it a little more bearable.

With shoes and jackets, my entire fall capsule probably includes just shy of 50 items. I’ll share a footwear and outerwear capsule in an upcoming post.

I think a lot of people have the misconception that a capsule wardrobe has to be full of black, white, grey and beige in order to work well. I know I did back when I started capsuling. But over the years, I’ve come to love a capsule wardrobe full of color and print. Looking at this selection of items, I can see a ton of outfits that I can make over the next 3 months.

How about you? Do you embrace color and print in your wardrobe?

Lovely capsule that you put together. The colours are perfect for fall. It looks like you may have included some vintage dresses as well which is just lovely. I can see tons of outfits from what you’ve chosen. I give you credit for cutting those items that wont fit your future lifestyle. I wish I could do the same, but fashion sometimes acts as almost a medicine, and I to often have to dress to feel good which sadly doesn’t always coincide with practicality!

Funnily enough, even though the capsule was pretty and I knew I could make lots of outfits, I ended up not feeling it. I came to the same realization that the restrictions I was. putting on myself were making me miserable so I decided to quit my capsule (just as I had started). I figured that if I was feeling that bad about it at the beginning, how would I feel in a month??!

I don’t do a capsule wardrobe but I do keep my wardrobe small to make choosing what to wear easier. I am intrigued by this idea though, and I like how you photographed each item separately! You really put a lot of thought into it!

Thank you Angel! It helps me to see everything a little more clearly in terms of creating outfits. And it’s so awesome that you keep your wardrobe small! I agree that it makes life so much easier.
