You are currently viewing What’s in my Colorful Spring Capsule Wardrobe?

I spent last week putting my spring capsule wardrobe together and now it’s ready for it’s big reveal. Using the steps outlined in this post, I ended up with 30 items, which is pretty consistent with past capsules.

Preparing this capsule was a little different as I was only pulling from the items that I already owned. In the past, I had usually shopped in preparation for the new season but as I’m in my third month of not buying any new or secondhand clothes, this was a step I skipped this year. Instead, I shopped my closet!

I was really excited about some of the pieces that I pulled out. I put them away at the end of the warm weather last year knowing that I would be excited to pull them back out. And I was. It’s good to miss things that you already own.

I recently read something that has stayed with me. It was in a comment section on Reddit and the general premise was – if the stuff we already own doesn’t make us happy, why do we think buying more of it will. This really resonated with me. I think we continually keep buying things because we’re trying to fill some void. We are not entirely happy and content with our lives as they are. It really reinforced my goal to find contentment with the things that I already own this year. That’s not to say that I don’t see things that I’d like to own…I definitely do. But I’m trying to remind myself that as cool as I might think something is, I don’t NEED it.

A wooden clothing rack holding 24 items of clothing is in front of a light wall. There is a wire basket in front of it, off to the right, which holds 6 sweaters.

What’s in my Spring Capsule Wardrobe

After going through the items from my winter capsule and pulling out the things that I wanted to carry over to spring, and then adding the items from storage, I ended up with the following breakdown:

  • 10 Dresses
  • 6 Sweaters
  • 1 Top
  • 1 Blouse
  • 3 Jackets
  • 1 Shirt
  • 1 Bodysuit
  • 1 Jumpsuit
  • 3 Pants
  • 3 Jeans

1st Row (l-r): memade dress (pattern: McCalls m7969); Co. dress*; Burberry Brit dress*; Lara Krude dress*; Zara dress*

2nd Row (l-r): Tomas Maier dress*; E.D. Michaels vintage dress*; Mansur Gavriel dress*; memade dress (pattern: McCalls m7969); memade dress (pattern: Friday Pattern Co. Wilder Gown)

3rd Row (l-r): Thank You sweater*; Billabong sweater*; Babaa no. 18 cardigan; Tradlands cardigan; Plenty by Tracy Reese*

4th Row (l-r): Eileen Fisher sweater; memade top (pattern: Closet Core Patterns Cielo Top); Doen blouse; Everlane bodysuit; Universal Thread denim jacket*

5th row (l-r): Orvis vintage patchwork jacket*; Freedom Foundry shirt*; Tradlands Chore Coat; Tradlands jumpsuit; Lululemon pants*

6th row (l-r); Eileen Fisher pants*; memade pants (pattern: Sew Liberated Arenite Pants); Levi’s Ribcage jeans; Agolde Jamie jeans*; Agolde jeans*

Most of the items in my capsule wardrobe (and overall wardrobe) were bought secondhand (denoted by *). A growing number of items are ones that I’ve made myself. The smallest percentage of items (both in my capsule and overall wardrobe) are ones that were acquired new – purchased by me or received as a gift.

In this capsule, the breakdown is:

  • memade items – 5/30 ~ 17%
  • secondhand items – 17/30 ~ 57%
  • new items – 8/30 ~ 27%

I will style these 30 items for the next 3 months, until the start of the summer season.

Exceptions for my Capsule Wardrobe

Just like every capsule, I have a few exceptions for my spring capsule.

I do not include workout clothes, pajamas, lounge clothes, underwear or socks in my capsule.

As per usual, I do not include shoes or coats. I anticipate that the few light jackets that I have included will be warm enough, but since the spring weather can fluctuate a lot, I don’t put away my heavier coats until summer.

I also do not include shoes or handbags. I have done this in the past and have felt restricted. I have a small selection of shoes and handbags that I like to use in the warmer months.

As with my winter capsule wardrobe, I am allowed to make clothing for my capsule wardrobe. Sewing is a hobby and I enjoy the idea of adding items that I’ve slowly and intentionally made. I can’t think of a better definition of slow fashion than that.
